How to commission a stained glass window.

1. The First Conversation
Every stained glass window begins with a conversation. We can meet in person or talk over the phone to discuss your ideas, inspirations, practical requirements, and the intended size and setting of the piece.

2. Exploring the Design
Together we will consider the character of the window — from colour and atmosphere to the use of painted or fused glass elements. These techniques can add depth, texture, and detail, while also influencing the overall cost and timescale.

3. Initial Estimate
A ballpark estimate will then be provided, based on the scale of the work, materials, techniques involved, and the time required to create the piece.

4. Reserving the Commission
Once you decide to proceed, a deposit secures your place in the workshop schedule and allows the design process to begin.

5. Developing the Artwork
Detailed artwork is created for your approval, including a full-size stained glass cartoon — the working drawing from which the window will be made. At this stage we refine the composition, finalise the colour palette, and carefully select the glass to achieve the desired light and mood.

6. Final Quote
When the design has been agreed in full, a final and accurate quote is provided.

7. Making the Window
The window is then brought to life by hand using traditional stained glass techniques. This process may include: Cutting each piece of glass to the cartoon pattern Hand painting and/or fusing glass where required Firing painted and fused sections in the kiln Leading the individual pieces together Soldering each joint Cementing the panel for strength and weatherproofing Carefully cleaning and finishing the completed window Each stage is carried out with patience and attention to detail, allowing the design to gradually emerge in glass and light.
8. Completion
Once finished, arrangements can be made for collection or delivery.

9. Payment
Payments can be made incrementally throughout the commission, with the remaining balance due on completion.

Below are some examples of previous commissions. I will change the theme of the slideshow from time to time. This one is examples of flowers and birds within a window.
