The story of the Northern lights

So this is a story of a window thats for my Auntie Sue and her husband Bob.
Whilst thinking about how to put together a photo story, I got the notion to revisit the past and why I wanted to make Stained Glass windows in the first place.
A very long time ago I lived on the West coast of Ireland in Connemara near a place called Spittle.
One of the things that gave me joy at that time was a church that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean that contained the most beautiful Stained glass window.
It depicted the sea and the storms and had such beauty that i wished to learn how to make a stained glass window.
I found myself living in America , and in the evenings attended a Stained glass course to do just that.
Skip lots of years and many other stories to the present day.
To pay the dreaded bills I spent a lot of time participating in festivals, events, farmers markets, putting my work in Galleries and so on.
Some success and the work did and does sell, However , have come to the realisation that a lot of these things are way to expensive and spending all day manning a stall is just not for me so have come back to commission based work.
There are some that I will always want to do because of seeing friends, listening to good music and those that support hand made work such as Musicport, Shrewsbury folk festival, Whitby folk festival and various local events here in Leeds.

Chose this particular window as Auntie Sue wishes very much to see the Northern lights and I am sure one day soon she will, Bob?
Here are the pictures : From the idea to the cutting out of the glass.
More will be added when painted and leaded.
Hope that for all of you that are mystified by the process this will clarify.

Testimonials

The window that Jo designed and produced for us lights up the landing of our home.  Jo enthusiastically embraced the brief and talked us through the process, then produced detailed drawings so we had a clear vision of what the finished piece would look like.  She also invited us to her studio to see the work-in-progress, and explained the materials and techniques that she would be using; this was fascinating and gave us a real feeling of involvement in the process as well as a deeper appreciation of the skill and artistry involved.  The window exceeded our expectations and it will bring pleasure to us, our family and friends for decades to come.
Mr Kevin Armstrong

Joanne Eisenberg's curiosity, sensitivity, and personal warmth make her interested in and open to those with whom she interacts artistically. Her thoughtful and enthusiastic style of communication invites others to share their views and feel like peers and collaborators who are full participants in the creative process.

"I started off my experience at Hannah stained glass with a glass fusing course and I enjoyed my experience so much I came back a couple of months later to do the stained glass class. I have learnt new skills from each class and it has made me want to pursue  more as a result, Jo-Ann is lovely ,a fantastic teacher and the studio feels like a second home! Thank you Jo for making my experience fun and exciting”
JENNA , Leeds

"My first course with Hannah Stained Glass was the 5 week glass fusion course. I absolutely loved it. I went in without much in the way of ideas and Jo was very patient and encouraging. We managed to make 3 pieces each and I was very pleased with all of them.  I then signed on to the stained glass 5 week course which was brilliant. I really, really enjoyed learning how to shape and cut the glass as well and lead and cement the pieces together. I love my hot air balloon. Thank you Jo for a fantastic 10 weeks! "

I really enjoyed the copper foiling day. Jo’s studio is a lovely welcoming work space and she is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Her love of glass and attention to detail rubs off and I am very pleased with my angel light catcher. I would recommend one of her courses to anyone with an interest in glass whatever their ability.”
Margaret

"When I have attended one of Jo's classes, I have started with a partial vision of what I wanted to achieve. She offered creative, sensitive advice to refine and develop my ideas and guidance on how to turn them into reality. I was often presented with options to consider so it was very much my work. Her approach and support meant that the final pieces exceeded my original expectations. Time in the sessions simply sped by. Can't wait to register for another course."
Sue

"I had a really enjoyable time on my recent stained glass weekend course. Jo the tutor is really supportive, knowledgeable and her enthusiasm for her craft is infectious. It was a pleasure to work in such a pleasant comfortable studio and I am delighted with my panel. Her individual attention to pupils is first rate and I hope to do another course.
PS The lentil soup is to die for!"

"Jo thanks for another wonderful taster session. I am so pleased how my work turned out after being fired. I think one of the most exciting and fun parts are waiting to see what magical transformations have occurred during the firing process. I will definitely be back for more classes in the future and spreading the word to others what great classes you offer."

"I really enjoyed the course and learned new techniques. This course is excellent and would recommend to others. Jo provides a relaxed and helpful class. I’m intrigued to find out how my pice turns out."
Pat

"I had such a lovely day yesterday, my third course! (and I am already looking have forward to doing another later this year). I think what I have loved most about your courses (apart from your delicious lunches) is the way in which you have been able to meet the tuition needs of each individual person on the courses so seamlessly. I said it yesterday but will say it again THANK YOU for another truly enjoyable day."

" We are both thrilled with the finished windows - transforms the house - and they are everything we hoped. Beautiful designs - but still in keeping with the era of the house.
Many thanks again,
Ian

"Had a fantastic day, thank you.
Lovely atmosphere and lunch.
Delighted with end results."
Lucinda

"Had a wonderful time on the one day glass fusing course today. Jo explained all the different processes and techniques to us very clearly and I can't wait to see the end result when it's fired. The small class size meant that we could get advice when we needed it and it was fascinating to see the variety of pieces we produced in the end",
Ellie Twigg, Leeds

I finally picked up my glass fusion piece today and I am so happy with the end result. I've never taken a class like this before and have to admit, I was little nervous prior to that day! It was such a relaxing and informative day. Jo-Ann is a knowledgeable teacher with a calm and encouraging style and there was a great selections of materials on hand to play with. I couldnt have hoped for a better first experience in the world if glass. Thanks so much x

The 2 day leaded stained glass course is an ideal introduction for anyone looking to take up a new (and highly addictive) hobby! My chosen design was pretty complex but Jo supported and advised throughout the whole process and, as there were just 2 of us, I had all the time I needed. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to get an excellent intro to a fascinating subject.
Thanks Jo
